An aromatic, perennial herb 1-2m. high. Leaves alternate, 3 or 4 times pinnate, the ultimate leaflets very numerous. filiform, very elongate, the superior leaves with sheaths longer than the blade. Umbels compound, large, lengthily pedunculate, nearly regular. Flowers yellow, not involucrate; July-October; calyx with 5 very slight teeth; petals 5,entire, tips involute; stamens5; ovary 2-celled; stylo0podium large, conical. Fruit ovoid, 6 m m. long by2 m m. in diameter, greenish, glabrous; mericarp compressed dorsally, semicylindrical, with 5 prominent, nearly regular ribs; seeds somewhat concave, with longitudinal furrows.

The fruits are used medicinally. The taste is sweet and pungent, the odor recalling anise. The fruits contain 3-4% volatile oil comprising 50-60% anethole (C10H12O; crystallind mass at 20-21º, liquid above 23º; m.p. 22-23º; soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, acetone, petroleum ether; 1part soluble in 5 parts alcohol, ether; practically insoluble in water), pinene, limonene, dipentene, phellandrene.

Prescribed as carminative, stomachic, Dose, 2-5gm.

In Chinese medicine , Xiao Hui Xiang/Fennel fruit/seed is used orally in combination formulas for cholera, backache, and bedwetting. Fennel powder is used topically in Chinese medicine as a poultice for hard-to-heal snake bites.
