Overview
Tea has been cultivated for centuries, beginning in India and China. Today, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, second only to water. Hundreds of millions of people drink tea, and studies suggest that green tea in particular has many health benefits.
There are three main varieties of tea -- green, black, and oolong. The difference is in how the teas are processed. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. Antioxidants are substances that fight free radicals -- damaging compounds in the body that change cells, damage DNA, and even cause cell death. Many scientists believe that free radicals contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of health problems, including cancer and heart disease.
Why Use Green Tea Extract?
Although drinking green tea can be a refreshing and healthy habit, its taste is not agreeable to many. Using sugar to offset its bitterness just becomes counterproductive to someone trying to lose weight. Adding milk to make it more palatable not only increases the calories but also hinders the absorption of catechins.
This is where green tea extract comes in. It is a herbal derivative containing all the active ingredients of green tea in concentrated form, available as capsules or liquid extract. Natural green tea also contains caffeine, although to a lesser extent than coffee. Caffeine is also a substance that boosts energy expenditure but many people are sensitive to it. The advantage of using green tea extract is that decaffeinated varieties are available.
Main Functions
1. Cancer Prevention

1. In medicine, applied to enhance the human immunity and the treatments of leukemia, stomach cancer,
skin cancer, esophageal cancer and other tumor diseases;
2. In the food industry, used as antioxidants, preservatives, removing foul agents;
3. In chemical products, used as special durability agents and skin(hair) agents;
4. In the tobacco industry, used as cigarette filters antidotes;
5. In agriculture, used as growth hormone and unique pesticides.
Pharmacology
The polyphenols in green tea are catechins, with multiple linked ringlike structures. Polyphenols are a form of bioflavonoids with several phenol groups. They control both taste and biological action.
The dominant and most important catechin in green tea is Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a potent antioxidant which is used for food production, as well asin animal research studies. The phenol groups capture prooxidants and free radicals. EGCG is over 200 times more powerful than vitamin E in neutralizing the prooxidants and free radicals that attack lipids in the brain, in vivo. It is 20 times more potent than vitamin E in reducing formation of peroxides in lard by the Active Oxygen Method, in vitro.
Available Forms
Most green tea dietary supplements are sold as dried leaf tea in capsule form. Look for standardized extracts of green tea. There are also liquid extracts made from the leaves and leaf buds. The average cup of green tea contains 50 - 150 mg polyphenols (antioxidants). Decaffeinated green tea products contain concentrated polyphenols. Caffeine-free supplements are available.
