Ouzo is the national drink of the Greeks. It symbolizes more than anything else, the Greek way of thinking, which is based on optimism, and the joy of life.
Evergreen Organics ouzo comes from the Roumbou family in Prevesa, a third generation
ouzo producing family with a long tradition in the art of ouzo production.
The process begins as alcohol is triple distilled and then brought together with herbs and
other ingredients, including star anise, coriander, cloves, angelica root, licorice, mint,
wintergreen, fennel, hazelnut and even cinnamon and lime blossom. The mixture is boiled in a still, regulated by a taster. The resulting liquid is cooled and stored for several months before it is diluted to about 80 proof, or approximately 40 per cent alcohol. It is distilled three times for a smoother stronger taste. The key to drinking ouzo is to eat snacks known as mezedes. These can be fish like sardines and octopus or salads like Greek salad with feta and olives.
