palm kernel Cake/ Expeller is an important palm kernel oil by-product. In additional to palm oil, Malaysia is also the world's largest producer and exporter of PKC/E and palm kernel oil. PKC/PKE is obtained from the palm kernel after palm kernel oil has been extracted. The kernel is the endosperm of white cellular mass coated with a tough black membrane or testa, which is encased in a thick shell or endocarp of an oil palm seed. The kernel contains 50% fats, 9% crude protein and significant amounts of digestible starches, sugars and cellulose.
Advantages of using PKC/PKE in animal feed:
1. High energy source- High contents of ME and CF allow PKC/E to be used as an excellent source of energy for growing ruminants, particularly those raised on feedlot systems. It is also an excellent ingredient for dairy cattle.
2. Aflatoxin-free- PKC/E is free of aflatoxin and therefore is very safe for animal feeding. It is also free of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides and dioxins. High dry metter content inherent in PKC/PKE discourages growth of micro-organisms and mould, and optimises intake and overall growth performance.
3. Good Palatability- PKC/E is highly palatable for ruminant animals. It contains Vitamin E, which acts as a natural antioxidant. Its low content of unsaturated fatty acids also reduces rancidity problem.
4. Readily availability- The production of PKC/E in Malaysia is continuous throughout the year and this guarantees uninterrupted supply and availability of PKC/E to be used as a main ingredient for livestock feeding, both locally and abroad.
5. Cost Effectiveness- PKC/E is a cost effective and practical ingredient for use un ration formulations for various livestock animals. Beef production utilising PKC/E-based diets is more economical under local dietary and management systems as compared to non PKC/E-based diets.
