The papaya is native to South Mexico and neighbouring Central America.

Description:
The papaya is greenish-yellow to deep orange, up to 30 cm long. Ripe fruits have soft, juicy flesh and thin skin. In general a sweet taste, a bit like melon, with a slight musky aroma. At the centre of the fruit is a pocket filled with lots of small grey-black seeds.
Interesting Facts:
Papayas contain a lot of vitamins and very little acid. The leaves and fruits of the papaya tree contain enzymes (papain) which help human digestion. One cannot determine if a papaya is of the yellow or the red variety just by looking at the outside of the fruit.
