Pepino dulce is a small, unarmed, herbaceous plant or bush with a woody base and fibrous roots.
From the heavens of the Andes Mountains, the Pepino fruit was a feast which only the Inka and Mayan gods enjoyed. According to legendary myths, condors protected the golden fruit from the outside world. Today, the Pepino fruit may be found in rare european specialty markets and stores and is sold by people who have witnessed the snowy peaks of the Andes. At harvest time, a ripe Pepino fruit is easily distinguished by its yellow/yellow Orange color with purple streaks. Its skin is soft and thin. The pulp, offwhite to golden yellow in colour has a delicate feel, pleasant odour and an acidulous taste. Its extreme succulent and nutritious taste will remind you of a pear and/or melon and is sure to impress the most stubborn taste buds. The Pepino fruit may be kept refrigerated for a period of no longer than a month. It is best served fresh chilled with the skin on or in a fruit salad peeled and sprinkled with lemon.
