pertus pomerol 2005
Petrus: The king of Pomerols... Petrus is, without any doubt, the first wine from Pomerol. However, there is no classification of the Pomerol’s wines. The name “Petrus” comes from the locality, on which the grounds of the domaine were installed. One could think that its history goes back to a few centuries. Not at all, this mythical wine finds its origins in a very recent time. However, this young history gives to this wine a legendary dimension. During the entire XIXth century, the domaine belonged to the family Arnaud. Around 1925, Mrs Loubat was the only owner of the domaine. She thought that Pomerol’s wines were underestimated, in comparison with wines from Médoc, from Graves or even from St. Emilion. Then, she decided to prove that ‘her Pomerol’ was as qualitative as a nice St. Emilion. She emphasized the quality more than the quantity (we speak today about a production bordering the 30.000 bottles per year). In 1961, Mrs Lacoste and Mr. Lignac, niece and nephew of Mrs Loubat, inherited the property. For already a few years, Jean-Pierre Moueix has repurchased the shares of Mr. Lignac and has managed the property with Mrs Lacoste. Petrus was in particular the wine of the Kennedys and was also present at the wedding of Elizabeth of England. Located on a small argillaceous hill of about 40 meters, Petrus’s wine is produced with 95% of merlot and 5% of cabernet franc. The merlot, main type of vine of the Pomerol’s wines, is in the right environment,t in the clay soil of Petrus. The 11.5 hectares of vines are located around the Graves of the local croup. The roots are at the surface, and therefore not very deep and thus do not need to draw out too deeply to provide their requirements of water. The size of the vines is short, which thus makes it possible to concentrate the juice in the Grape. In addition to its single soil in the world, Petrus profits from the care of men who are keen on their wine: Michel Gillet, Manager of the vines, François Veyssière, Manager of the wine storehouse and Jean-Claude Berrouet, vinificator. The name of Pomerol drew its name from Latin, poma, which means fruits with pips.
