Portuguese Liqueur Ginja
In the XII century, the council territory is occupied by Christians, and in 1172, D. Afonso Henriques gives a special order to D. Gonçalo to buil a Cistercian convent called Santa Maria dos Tomarães. At that time, the Cistercian Monks implemented new cultural habits that last even after their extinction in the XVI century.
Today, in the region of Ourém, there are still remaining ancient know-how, recipes and elixirs, legacy of those times, as the “Ginginha d´Castelo Ourém” (Cherry liqueur of the Ourém Castle), that passed through generations.
Since 1912, inside the Medieval Castle ramparts, in front of the “Sé Colegiada”, we can find this cherry liqueur in a old typical tavern, whose recipe is kept in secret within the family.
