The Best Muskmelon in the World

The muskmelon which Nagura Melon Nojo (Nagura Melon Farm) grows is a species of pure variety of Earl’s Favorite melon which has green-colored-flesh. The melon needs complicated cultivation management.

Nagura Melon Farm has a 40-year-old history of growing melons. Our farm has seven three-quarter span greenhouses and total growing area of 1,200 square meters; if you include the seedling room, the total growing area is 1,320 square meters. We control the temperature of the greenhouses by a computer at cultivation-management greenhouse; however, for the water management, we use our experiences.

The quality of melons depends on the daily watering so we have to stay sharp every single day, which means 365 days a year.

Cultivation schedule

Seedling-raising period : It takes about 30 days to prepare seedlings. This determines the half of the outcome we get.

Tree-growing period : This is the period that takes about 20 weeks until the flowers bloom after we plant the seedlings to beds. In this period, the quality of trees and ovaries are determined, so whether we can grow big high quality melons or not depends on the management in this period.

Mating period : Female plants are pollinated with male flower by hand. We record the date when the plants are mated. It takes about five days.

Enlarging period : This is the period that the ovaries grow big and netted-like patterns appear. When the melons grow as big as eggs, we remove the melons without one. Ten days after the pollination, we hang each ovary with string. We control temperature and the amount of water we give by carefully checking hardness of the melons.

Maturing period : The netted-like patterns would be fixed on the surface 30 days after the pollination. We put a shade on each melon to avoid direct sunlight and we let them grow their flesh and taste.

Harvesting : Fifty days after the pollination, we cut off a sample and check its sugar concentration. We check the date and quality of the melon, and then harvest them one by one.

Shipment : We sort out the melons, pack them and ship them to our customers.

The melon will be fit to eat in seven more days after the shipment.

As we explained above, Nagura Melon Farm grows Muskmelon, a pure variety of Earl’s Favorite melon by:

-using good groundwater from 60 meters under the ground

-growing them in big and clean three-quarter span greenhouses

-managing water and temperature carefully by skilled melon farmers

-making sure the melons have good taste and enough sugar content before harvesting

-managing cultivation and shipment thoroughly so as to provide safe melons.

It takes about 100 days to grow a single melon from one seed. We made every effort to grow those melons by utilizing our know-how, knowledge and skills that are gained from years of our experience.

Being certified as Eco-farmer, we have introduced sustainable agricultural production system. We are working on agriculture that preserve environment; for example, we disinfect the soil of our field with steam, and we prepare soil by using organic fertilizer and compost.

This is a certification accredited by Shizuoka Prefecture for the efforts to ensure food safety of farm and marine products. We were the first certified melon farmer.
