Growing form: Annual herb.

Height: 20–35 cm (8–14 in.). Stem erect, unbranched, hairy.

Flower: Corolla zygomorphic, dark red, 9–15 mm (0.35–0.6 in.) long, fused at base. Petals 5; the upstanding the 'standard', the lateral two the 'wings', the lower two united to form the 'keel', overall shape of corolla being butterfly-like. Calyx 5-lobed, brown-haired. Stamens 10. A single carpel. Inflorescence a long-stalked, dense, racemose head.

Leaves: Alternate, stalked, stipulate. Blade with 3 leaflets; leaflets widely obovate–obcordate, with entire–shallowly toothed margins, hairy. Stipules elliptic, blunt, violet-veined, reddish-tipped, mostly fused with stalk.

Fruit: Indehiscent pod, remains inside calyx.

Habitat: Lawns, gardens, fields, harbours.

Flowering time: June–August.

Crimson clover is rarely seen, but that is purely to do with the rarity of the species – its fantastic deep red elongated flowers could hardly go unnoticed. Crimson clover grows ferally across a large area of Europe. It is also cultivated, particularly in North America, as a fodder crop, to provide food for bees and to improve the soil.
