Purple Corn (Zea mays) is a variety of corn, one of the valleys of the Peruvian Andes which are commonly grown to 3,000 m. There are different varieties of purple corn, all originated from the species "Kculli" that is still growing in the Peruvian Andes.

It has an intense dark purple and mysteriously if planted in a different country to Peru does not leave the same color purple, sometimes even up could go yellow. Specialists consider diverse hypotheses undiscovered factors in climate, land or water.

Purple Corn has been used since pre-Inca times and is found in different ceramic objects of culture "Mochica" dating back over 2,500 years.

 

For thousands of years, the people of the Andes have soaked Purple Corn to make a refreshing drink called chicha, which is now recognized as a nutritive powerhouse due to its extremely high anthocyaninin content.

Anthocyaninins are miracle molecules found in darkly colored fruits and vegetables.  They’re being studied for their ability to improve everything from cardiovascular health to collagen regeneration.  There’s also been some very promising studies on their effects on cancer cells.

 

RESEARCH ON Purple Corn 

 

 

Purple Corn has been studied several times , in a Japanese In vivo Study performed in rats , researchers found that when rats received a daily intake of Purple Corn which contained high levels of C3G , this component is the main anthocyanin present in Zea Mays L. Their serum showed  a  significantly  decrease in   the susceptibility of  their serum  lipids to undergo oxidation.

 

Recent  experimental  studies  in  animals  and  humans has shown  that  increased consumption of  polyphenols  can  lower  blood  pressure  in  hypertensive patients , it can  reduce  the tendency  of  blood  to  clot and  increase  the  total  antioxidant  capacity  of  the  blood. Since the purple portion in  Zea  mays  L. ' Kculli ' is  rich  in  polyphenols, regular  intake  of  this  Peruvian plant could be useful for  people  suffering  from  hypertension.
