Rice is the most important and extensively grownfood crop in the world. It is the staple food of more than 60 percentof the world population and will remain as lifeline for the people inAsia and Pacific regions where 90% of it is produced and consumed.India has the largest area under rice in the world and ranks second inthe production after China. India has also emerged as a major riceconsumer.

Rice belongsto the family Graminae and as such exhibits traits similar to all othercereals. Cultivated rice is of two types; African or Oriental. The mostcommon is that of species Oryza sativa (Oriental) with the probablecountries of origin being South China to East India. Records show itbeing grown in China as early as 2800 B.C.

Four major types of rice are produced worldwide:

1. India accounts for more than 75% of globaltrade and is grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Indica ricecooks dry and separate.
2. Japonica rice, typically grown in regions with coller climates, accounts for 12% of global rice trade.
3. Aromatic rice, primarily jasmine from Thailand andBasmati from India and Pakistan, accounts for around 10% of globaltrade and sell at a premium in world markets.
4. Glutinous rice, grown mostly in Southeast Asia and used in desserts and ceremonial dishes, accounts for most of the remainder.

Themarket size of rice in India is more than 75,000 crores with an averageannual production of 85 million MT. Since rice is the staple food offarmers themselves, farmers retain roughly 40% of the produce for food,feed and seed purpose which does not enter into the trading valuechain. Of the balance 60% traded and marketed, about 50% is handled bypublic sector (the Food, Corporation of India assisted by various stateagencies) and the rest by private trade.
India exports rice to a large number of countries in the world. Indiastotal exports of rice were 2.2 million MT in 2001-2002 valued at Rs.3174 crores. Rice is mainly exported to Gulf countries, European Union,USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka,Japan etc.
