THE COMPANY
Mel Serra de Portel is a family company founded nearly three decades ago, whose knowledge and respect for the bees’ life has existed through several generations.
Currently, Mel Serra de Portel is a certified company and is focused on the production and commerce of bee products, including honey, Pollen and others.
Our Facilities are subject to periodic inspections by HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), which aims to ensure the compliance with a food safety system implemented through the control of the entire manufacturing process, from primary production and reception of raw materials to processing, packaging and final product storage and distribution.
The characteristics of the honey we produce are based on the diversity of the Serra de Portel flora and its favourable climatic conditions, which give it an excellent quality.
Located on the southern border of Alentejo, on the right side of Guadiana River, in Portugal, Serra de Portel (with a maximum altitude of 424 metres) benefits from that zone’s Mediterranean climate, rich in micro-climatic variations.
These conditions, and the fact that Serra de Portel presents fairly steep slopes of difficult access, have contributed, over the centuries, for the development of areas of dense vegetation where no agriculture is practiced.
This is a typical area of “Montado”, populated by cork trees and holm oaks, surrounded by a specific set of plants - such as Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) Gum Rockrose (Cistus Ladanifer), Halimium and Genistas ?that provides optimal living conditions for bees in this region.
