Salted seaweeds/sea grapes / latu / umi buduo/ caulerpa lentillifera

Sea grapes “ CAULERPA LENTILLIFERA” are widely seen in Cebu, a small island located in the southern and northern part of the Philippines.

THE green seaweed or sea grapes, CAULERPA LENTILLIFERA, commonly known as “lato”, “lato-bilog”, “ar-arusip” or sea grapes is a good source of iron, iodine, calcium, and vitamins A & C. It has a grape-like structure which is robust, crispy and watery.  In the northern part of Luzon and the rest of the country, it is usually sold fresh, but recently, brine-salted “lato” is being exported to major countries.

This is the most popular edible species of Caulerpa. In the Philippines, the seaweed is eaten fresh as a salad mixed with vinegar and or soy sauce with tomato and other spices.
