Sardinella (Sardinella aurita) – is a small pelagic fish. Sardinella is found in abundance in waters Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and is caught primarily off the coast of South America, and along the east coast of South Africa. Common commercial size of Sardinella is 15 - 25 cm, and at weight of 100 – 250 gr. Sardinella is a small, silver fish with bluish-green back and silvery white sides and belly. It inhabits coastal waters to a depth of 100 m, likes clear saline water with a minimum temperature below 24°C. Feeds mainly on zooplankton, especially copepods. Most of Sardinella’s commercial catch is used for canning purposes. Total annual catch accounts for more than 400 000 tones
