Sesame Seeds (Also known as Sesamum Indicum) is a seasonal crop that mostly grows in the raining seasons and can be cultivated twice a year in areas or regions in Nigeria that have long duration of rain. Sesame seed is an important crop to Nigerian agriculture because it is extensively cultivated in the country. They are used in the creation of traditional medicines to prevent and cure sickness.
Sesame Seeds have the highest oil contents of any seed. The oil could be extracted from sesame seeds by crushing the seed. The oil is used locally for cooking as well as for medicinal purposes such as the treatment of ulcers and burns. The stem and the oil extract are equally used in making local soap.
Nigeria is amongst the top 10 exporters of sesame seeds in the world. In all states where sesame seeds are cultivated in Nigeria, individuals are involved in the local processing of commercial products through Sesame seeds.
