What is Shea Butter?
Shea butter (karité) is a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa or Butyrospermum parkii) which is native in the dry savannah belt of West and Central Africa. The oil-rich Shea nuts are surrounded by thin, nutritious pulp. Shea tree is a traditional African food plant bearing fruit from the age of 10 up to 200 years. The average dry seed yield per tree is 8 kg. Our shea butter are being made into creams, lotions, soaps and other products at our factory. It is also known as “women’s gold,” which has been used for ages as a natural beauty balm because it moisturizes, soothes and protects the skin.
Why is Shea Butter Soft or Hard?
Fatty acid composition is dependent on climatic conditions that's why the consistency of shea butter varies from region to region. Stearic and oleic acids account for 85-90 % of total fatty acid content. The higher the oleic acid content is, the softer the butter is. High stearic acid content is responsible for solid consistency. The softest shea butter is produced in Uganda (East Africa) because of the relatively high oleic acid content of the nuts. That is the reason why they are great source of liquid shea oil. In West African countries(Nigeria) the fatty acid profile is not so uniform. There can be soft and hard butter producing trees next to each other within small area. The hardest butter comes from Burkina Faso where it is used in cooking and cosmetics as well. Thanks to its fatty acid composition, it melts at body temperature and absorbs rapidly without leaving a greasy feeling.
Traditional Preparation of Unrefined Shea Butter
Removing the pulp. Dehydrating and cracking the shell to get the nut which is the source of shea butter.
Crushing the nuts with a mortar and pestle.
Roasting the crushed nuts in a large pot over open fire. This gives a smoky smell to shea butter. (Better quality can be obtained by sun-drying of the shea nut since smoking the nuts over a fire contaminates it with hydrocarbons.)
The roasted shea nuts are grounded into a smoother paste.
Water is added to the paste and it’s kneaded by hand to separate the oils.
The collected butter oils are in curd state. They need boiling over fire to remove the remaining water.
The creamy butter is ladled and formed into balls.
Refined or Unrefined Shea Butter
Pure, unrefined and handcrafted shea butter contains the maximum amount of healing and moisturizing properties, because a mild method is applied to preserve the effective agents. Shea butter is not white and not totally odorless. It has ivory or beige color (the light yellow tint is because of the Vitamin A content). Karité is often refined to remove the color and the scent and to get a uniform, aesthetically appealing, white butter.
The refined shea butter is extracted from the shea kernels with petroleum solvents. The extracted oil is boiled to drive off the toxic solvents, then refined and bleached (often deodorized) using harsh chemicals. Solvent residues remain in the refined shea butter. Antioxidants and Preservatives are also added to it. Unfortunately, refined shea butter lacks most of the moisturizing, healing and nutritive properties, and what's more, it's not smooth and creamy any more, but tend to be hard and grainy.
So depending upon the formulation, laboratories will need and ingredient without odor, without color and with no acidity. In this case there is only one choice : REFINED SHEABUTTER.
Unrefined Shea Butter main applications
In all cases, melt completely by rubbing smoothly in your hands before application until butter is perfectly liquid.
Strong conservative agent will leave your hair slky and revitalized :
Revitalizing application, the best of treatments : the day before shampooing, oil hair by massaging the points with a big rot of butter. Wrap your hair in a hot towel, your keratin will absorb all what is required.
Preparation. If you have a very dry hair, ten minutes after shampooing, apply a little rot of butter to bring brightness and life to your hair.
Moisturizing the face superficial layers :
The face is the main beneficiary of the daily use of shea butter. Concentrate on inert parts (lower part of the nose, the corners of lips). Massage about ten minutes.
Flexibility : it is the high content unsaponifiable elements and vitamin F in sheabutter that make it so flexible. You can feel the difference just by touching your skin after a massage.
Moisturizing : the superficial layers of the skin absolutely require an acceleration of blood circulation. You will notice a tingly sensation on your skin immediately after application.
Protection : the butter will penetrate deep into your skin, leaving a satin finish to the skin. The protection is real and will last a long time. Sheabutter softens the lips and gives them a protective film against the cold. Sheabutter also helps irritated noses due to allergies or colds. A little rot of butter may applied in each nostril.
Revitalizing the skin :
A rot of butter on all exposed parts : forearms and legs to eliminate squamas. It is an ideal for softening dry skins.
