Sour cherry belongs to the Rosaceae family, gender Prunus. Its natural habitat is the northern hemisphere.The main region for its growing in our country is South and Southeastern Serbia. Owing to the quality of its offer, Serbia has become a significant exporter of sour cherry and the Oblacinska sour cherry is the most demanded variety because of its high quality.The Oblacinska sour cherry has become the leading variety in sour cherry growing in Serbia, since it is a combination of numerous positive biological and technological characteristics. The Oblacinska sour cherry is characterized by great uniformity of fruit size, simultaneous ripening and easy removing of stem. The colour is resistant to darkening and degrading. The fruits are sweet-sourish taste, and the contents of water in them are between 82%-86%. A large sour cherry production in Serbia is realized through constant creation of new sour cherry plantations on individual owners property.The latest medical research shows that sour cherry fruits represent a source of substances with anti- oxidative and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Owing to these substances, the use of sour cherry fruits as food can be useful in the prevention of cancer, cardiac diseases and arthritis.
