The production of sunflower honey in Bulgaria reaches up to 30% of the whole production.
Sunflower is an annual plant. It is grown as a basic culture in this country (with blooming period June-July) or as a secondary culture (with blooming period August-September). A number of factors strongly influence the nectar production. These are the soil, air humidity and plant type.
Depending on the climatic conditions during the honey collection the yielded quantities of such honey are between 500 and 2,000 tons. Its pollen content varies from 20 to 50%, and the color may be from 35 to 75 mm (golden to dark brown). The color and flavor are influenced by the blooming during the same period of the following honey-bearing plants: clover (Trifolium sp.), three-leaf clover (Lotos corniculatis), (Melilotus albus), thyme (Thymus sp.), marjoram (Origanum vulgare), mustard (Sinapsis arvensis), thistle (Cardung nutans), Lucerne (Medicago sativa).
