Nepal tea is essentially identical to . Nepal's tea industry owes its roots to the British East India Company. Production began in 1863 with the first factory opening in Ilam in 1878. Clones of tea bushes mostly of the Chinese hybrid variety were brought across the border have been planted in the districts of , Taplejung, Panchthar and Dhankuta.

Sometime around 1864, the Prime Minister of Nepal, Junga Bahadur Rana, while on tour to China brought Tea seeds back from China. Colonel Thapa, the Governor General of the eastern region of Nepal, set up two plantations - THE ILAM TEA ESTATE AND THE SOKTIM TEA ESTATE which are now under Nepal Tea Development Corporation Ltd.

Nepal Tea has benefited from improved market organization over the past five years and quality is improving rapidly. In 2003 HIMALAYAN TEA PRODUCERS COOPERATIVE LIMITED (HIMCOOP) was established to meet the marketing needs of the Tea Producers of Nepal.

There are four flushes of tea in Nepal (excluding tea):

  • First flush , Begins in the springtime when leaves yield a light, delicate tea. This has light gold color with a gentle aroma.
  • Second flush , leaves gain more strength.
  • Monsoon flush , very intense and dark as tea develops full color & strength
  • Autumn flush , a fantastic combination of musky flavors, tangy aromas & an amber liquor.
