Gunpowder is a very famous tea, inside and outside of China. Gunpowder is widely consumed throughout the Middle East, often blended with fresh mint and sugar. In China, this tea is called Green Pearl tea; the tight roll of the leaves helps retain flavor and aroma for much longer than many other greens. A delicate shine on the pellets indicate the tea is quite fresh.

A classic green tea from Zhejiang province, China. Gunpowder, as the name implies, is made up of leaves hand-rolled into tiny pellets. These resemble gunpowder, and give this tea its distinct name. Full-bodied cup with a hint of smokiness and smooth mouthfeel. Blend with spearmint to create the famous 'Moroccan Mint' tea.
Gunpowder tea leaves are withered, steamed, rolled, and then dried. Although the individual leaves were formerly rolled by hand, today most gunpowder tea is rolled by machines (though the highest grades are still rolled by hand). Rolling renders the leaves less susceptible to physical damage and breakage and allows them to retain more of their flavor and aroma. In addition, it allows certain types of oolong teas to be aged for decades if they are cared for by being occasionally roasted.
