Due to its name, the common assumption about Valencias is that they originate from the city of that name in Spain, but the variety is most likely of Portuguese origin, and first attracted interest where it was grown in the Azores islands.

Fruit size is medium to large, roundish-oblong in shape, with an orange, moderately thin rind of smooth, but sometimes finely pebbled, texture. When the fruit is mature, it is not difficult to peel, and seeds typically number two to four per fruit. The rind is thin and leathery and the flesh well coloured, with a very high juice content, outstanding colour and good flavour.
