CHINA VITAMIN C PRICE TREND UPDATE

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is an essential nutrient for humans and certain other animal species. It is extensively used in nutritional products and health care and dietary supplements. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is also widely used as a food additive. Vitamin C has been produced commercially by extraction from plants, by chemical synthesis, by fermentation and by mixed fermentation/chemical synthesis methods. Traditionally the production of ascorbic acid was carried out by Reichstein process developed in 1933, which is a mixed fermentation/chemical synthesis method. In China, all Chinese producers use the two-stage fermentation process developed indigenously by Chinese researchers. Corn is an important raw material used in the production of vitamin C. Earlier corn price increases were expected to push the price of vitamin C up as they did with other corn based products like citric acid. However the Chinese vitamin C supply side was struggling with over capacity and in spite of earlier raw material price increases, the price of vitamin C keeps on falling. Back in 2009, when the vitamin C prices remained very high and material prices were relatively low, a great deal of the production capacity was expanded in pursuit of lucrative rewards in that year. The total annual production capacity of the existing vitamin C facilities in China has exceeded 80,000 metric tons and the figure may reach 180,000 tonnes by the end of 2010. At present, the global consumption of vitamin C totals around 120,000 tonnes.

Statistics show that China exported 29,200 tonnes of Vitamin C valued at 254 million US dollars in the first quarter of 2010, up 35.95 percent and 15.06 percent respectively year on year. However, the unit export price of Vitamin C during this period dropped 15.37% and ultimately the FOB price of vitamin C reached a new low of less than $5.00/kg. These prices were a record low in recent times and provided international buyers a short lived opportunity to capitalize on these lower rates. Close to September 2010, the prices started to rise once again and moved even beyond $6.0/kg with C&F rates reaching close to $7.00/kg. This was also the time of shut-down of Hebei Welcome plant-a majore supplier of vitamin C from NCPC group. It also coincided with the closure of the Aland Jiangsu (JSPC) factory. The situation further exacerbated by the adverse change in RMB/USD exchange rate in October. However by mid November, 2010 the export price was a stable at around approx $6.0/kg FOB for branded products.
