Water Melon is the fruit of a
plant originally from a vine of southern Africa. The water melon fruit has a
smooth exterior rind and a juicy, sweet, usually red interior flesh. Water
melon is botanically a fruit just like pepper, tomato and pumpkin. It is a large
oblong roundish fruit. Water melon is used as fruit because of its sweet
flavour and refreshing qualities.
In china, water melons are
stir-fried, stewed or more often pickled. Pickled water melon rind is also
commonly consumed in the southern United States.
WATERMELON HEALTH BENEFITS:
Water melon contains high
concentration of lycopene, an anti-oxidant that may help reduce the risks of
the diseases related to oxidative stress. Watermelon contains an ingredient called citrulline that can trigger the
production of a compound that helps relax the body’s blood vessels. Citrulline
reacts with the body’s enzymes and is changed into Arginine. Arginine boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes
blood vessels, the same basic effect that Viagra has to treat erectile
dysfunction.
The nitric oxide can also help
with angina, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems. Thus eating
watermelon benefits the heart and the circulatory and immune systems. Study also have suggested that taking an
Arginine supplement for weeks or months would significantly increase the
production of sperm and drastically improve erection. The effective dose is
from 2 to 5 grams per day.
Bhimu Patil, a researcher and
director of Texas A&M said that water melon rind contains 60 % more citrulline
than in the flesh. And among different water melons, the yellow-fleshed types
contain the most citrulline. ( www.zhion.com/herb/watermelon )
The vitamin A found in watermelon
is important for optimal eye health and boosts immunity by enhancing the
infection fighting activities of white blood cells called lymphocytes.
Vitamin B6 in watermelon helps
the immune system produced antibodies needed to fight many diseases. It helps
to maintain normal nerve function and form red blood cells. The body uses it to help breakdown proteins. The more
proteins you eat, the more Vitamin B6 you need.
Vitamin c in watermelon helps
bolster the immune system’s defenses against infections and viruses and can
protect a body from harmful free radicals that can accelerate aging and
conditions such as cataracts.A 2 cup serving of watermelon is
also a source of potassium, a mineral necessary for water balance and found
inside of every cell. People with low potassium levels can experience muscle
cramps.
Watermelon contains higher levels
of lycopene than any other Fresh Fruit or vegetable and is part of a healthy
diet. Research studies found that if people increased their fruit and vegetable
consumption to at least five servings a day, cancer rate could be reduced by
more than 20%.
