Angelica sinensis, commonly known as Dong Quai is reputed as female ginseng as it is an important herbal medicine in enriching blood, enhancing blood circulation and regulating menstruation for the female. This herb has been used as female medicine for centuries and the earliest record can date back in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing.
Modern Research
Angelica sinensis extract was shown to possess effect on hemopoietic and gastrointestinal tissues and anti-tumor effect. Pharmacological studies demonstrated the polysaccharides fraction of Angelica sinensis had radio-protective effects in irradiated mice through modulation of proliferative response of hemopoietic stem cells (Hardy ML etc, 2000; Mei QB etc., 1988).
