Also known as huckleberries in the United States, whortleberries to the English and blackberries to the Scots, the bilberry has been used as a medicinal herb since the 16th century. In Northern Europe bilberries are so treasured that it is every man's right to collect bilberries, regardless of land ownership!
In World War II, history tells of British RAF fighter pilots eating bilberry before night missions to help improve their night vision.

Bilberry is said to improve vision and retinal function, reverse the effects of degenerative eye disorders and help relieve eyestrain. Helpful for controlling blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, bilberry is also useful due to its beneficial effects in reducing cholesterol and relieving nausea and indigestion.
Bilberry's strong antioxidant activity may make it helpful in preventing a number of long-term illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. It is also considered helpful as an anti-inflammatory as well as for arthritis, kidney and urinary tract problems, menstrual cramps and diarrhea. Bilberry was traditionally used as an application for scurvy.
Bilbery has beneficial effects on capillaries, varicose veins, thrombosis and other circulatory complaints and may help reduce the risk of blood clots.
Bilberry is high in antioxidant-rich flavonoid compounds called anthocyanidins and vitamin C. The fruits contain tannins, which are substances that act as anti-inflammatory agents and also have astringent properties. Bilberry also contains Vitamin A (required for sharp vision) and glucoquinine (which has the ability to lower blood sugar levels).
Native to Europe, bilberry grows in many temperate and subarctic areas of the world such as Scotland, England, Ireland, Poland and Eurasia. Bilberry grows primarily in damp, acidic soils.
It is a small low-growing perennial shrub that grows to 16 inches high and produces small, dark berries in the summertime similar to blueberries in size, taste and appearance. But unlike the blueberry, bilberry produces single berries or pairs of berries on the bush instead of clusters.
A close relative of the cranberry, the bilberry has been used in traditional European medicine for almost a thousand years.
