A very good source of vitamin C and manganese, Blackcurrant berries are also a good source of iron and potassium, and contain magnesium and phosphorus as well.

Blackcurrants also contain many polyphenol Antioxidants like anthocyanins, which are responsible for the rich color of the berries and may have free-radical scavenging properties.

The seeds of the Blackcurrant are an especially important part of this nutritious fruit, being rich in essential fatty acids including gamma-linolenic acid -- a rare essential omega-6 fatty acid which may be helpful in promoting cardiovascular health and maintaining normal blood pressure levels. *

The Blackcurrant plant is a perennial, fruit-bearing shrub that can grow 3-6 feet in height when fully mature. Its bright green leaves are broad and divided into three to five triangular lobes.

Blackcurrant flowers are small and delicate, and grow in clusters of five to ten flowers. The blooms vary in color from yellow-green to reddish-pink and have five petals extending from a tubular stem. The round, edible Blackcurrant berries range from half a centimeter to one centimeter in diameter and are a deep, glossy purple -- so dark they appear almost black! Both the berries and leaves emit a pleasant aroma, and the berries have a distinctively tart flavor. The seeds of the Blackcurrant have a slight crunch and are highly nutritious. They are used to produce Blackcurrant oil.
