The vocation of the territory of Montalcino to produce high quality wines has been known for many centuries. Already in the Middle Ages the municipal statutes regolamentavano the start date of harvest, and during the siege of 1553, the wine never failed and Biagio di Monluc, the defense of the walls of Montalcino, in order to conceal the suffering "is arrubinava his face with his robust wine. " According to the Bologna Leandro Alberti (1550-1631), Montalcino is "appointed for them very good wines that are quarried from those pleasant hills.". The auditor Grand Ducal Gherardini Bartholomew on his visit to Montalcino 1676-1677 6050 signals the production of some of wine described as "vigorous wine, but not in large quantities." Charles Thompson in 1744 says that "Montalcino is not very popular except for the excellence of its wines".
Until the second half of the nineteenth century the wine most known and appreciated in the area was a sweet white wine, Moscadello di Montalcino, and it was at this time that Clemente Santi began to study the potential of a clone of the Sangiovese grape, Sangiovese Grosso, locally Brunello called because of the color particularly dark berries. Later, around 1860, the grandson of Clement, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi (son of Jacopo Biondi Santi and Catherine) began to produce a RED WINE that immediately proved to possess excellent qualities.
In 1869 a wine Chosen (Brunello) of the 1865 vintage was awarded a silver medal from the Comice the district. In 1893 the Ministry of Agriculture awards a wine Raffaello Padelletti and early twentieth centuries, the Brunello di Riccardo Paccagnini won many very prestigious awards both national (Italian Franco Exposure of Rome in 1910) and international (grand prix for Brunello 1894 Medaille d'or for one of 1899). Martini Professor of the School of Viticulture and Enology of Conegliano Veneto, in 1885, at a conference on "The future wealth of the province of Siena," highlights that the Senese "is now known to all national wine markets, and also in major foreign for various types of wines including Brunello di Montalcino ".
However, the Brunello wine remained for many years a well known and appreciated only in the surrounding area of the production area, also due to the sale price.
The vicissitudes of the early twentieth century led to a decline in the vine and wine production and very few manufacturers kept alive the production montalcinese between the two wars. The Brunello di Montalcino was presented by some companies to Senesi Typical Wine Exhibition held in Siena in 1932, 1933, 1935. After the Second World War, he began again to think about the production of wine and some had the foresight to project into the future, agreeing on the rules of production of Brunello di Montalcino.
After 1950, the reputation of Brunello di Montalcino is the first in Italy and then extended to other countries.
