Capelin (Mallotus Villosus) belongs to the family of smelts. Capelin is common in the northern parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Found in the North Atlantic - the Barents Sea, the Brazilian Sea and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Maine (USA). Capelin - it schooling pelagic fish feed on planktonic crustaceans. Capelin - purely marine species, lives in the open sea, in the upper layers of water (up to 300 m, at least 700 m). Common size of Capelin from 13 to 20 sm. Capelin is an important commericial fish. The stock of capelin is quite large, and in some years it is produced over half a mlllion tons. 2012 quota was set at 400,000 tons.
