CMC (carboxymethylcellulose sodium ) is a polyanionic cellulose ether. It has good solubility in both hot and cold water. It is used in drilling mud, in detergents as a soil-suspending agent, in resin emulsion paints, adhesives, printing inks, textile sizes, as Stabilizer in foods, as protective colloid in general, as pharmaceutic aid (suspending agent; tablet excipient; viscosity-increasing agent).
1. Synthesis
Alkali cellulose + Sodium choroacetate -->Carboxymethylcellulose sodium
or expressed as follows:
C 6 H 7 O 2 (OH) 3 +XNaOH→C 6 H 7 O 2 (OH) 3 ·XNaOH
C 6 H 7 O 2 (OH) 3 ·XNaOH+mCH 2 ClCOONa→
C 6 H 7 O 2 (OH) 3 -m·(OCH 3 COONa)m·(x-m)NaOH+mNaCl+mH 2 O
2. Dissolution Method
1. Add CMC portion-wise into a solvent system while stirring.
2. Add CMC portion-wise into a solvent system while heating. Optimum temperature 50°C-60°C.
3. If CMC is used in combination with other solids, disperse CMC in the solids thoroughly, and dissolve.
4. If CMC is pre-dispersed in an insoluble solvent, like ethanol or glycerine, the dissolution in water can be accelerated.
3. Package & Storage
1. Lined PP woven bag or kraft bag. N.W. 25kg.
2. CMC is highly hygroscopic. It shall be kept well closed and in a dry place
