Product Description
A perennial herb. Leaves basal, lengthily petiolate, glabrous, pinnate; leaflets 12-15 mm. long, oval-lanceolate, incised, the terminal leaflet longer than the others. Peduncle as long or longer than the leaves; bracts resembling leaves. Flowers yellowish white; sepals linear, lanceolate; petals to 10, margin undulate, two-thirds as long as the sepals; carpels to 14. Fruit a pod; seeds cylindrical, inflated at the middle, surface striate lengthwise, chestnut brown.
The rhizome is officinal. It occurs in pieces 5-6 cm. long, often covered with rootlets, the color brownish yellow, interior yellow-orange, the central pith deeper in color. The taste is bitter. The root of the related C. japonica Makino, indigenous to Japan and which commonly adulterates the Chinese market, contains the alkaloids coptisine(C19H15NO5 ; yellowish needles; m.p. 218°; soluble in alkalies; sparingly soluble in alcohol; very slightly soluble in water), worenine ( C20H17NO5 ; yellow crystalline powder; soluble in hot dilute alcohol), and berberine.
