What is HBOT?
| | Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a form of therapy that involves breathing pure oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber. While originally designed to treat “the bends” in divers, its applications have expanded to include carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, osteomyelitis (acute bone pain) and now, autism. HBOT enhances blood flow to the brain, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress and mobilizes stem cells from the bone marrow. Deficits in all these areas have been identified in the onset of autism. |
Hyperbaric Oxygen & Autism Treatment
Hyberbaric oxygen therapy is not the cure for autism. It may be, however, a way of ensuring the most complete recovery possible. Hyperbaric oxygen takes the stress off all the cells in the body by providing oxygen, a necessary component of every chemical and healing process, and allows the body to recover. Although the brain makes up less than 2% of the bodys physical mass, about 20-30% of the body's consumption of oxygen occurs within the brain andspinal cord. These areas are extremely sensitive and responsive to oxygen increases and support. HBOT is generally considered the simplest, safest and most effective way known in the field of medicine to provide substantial extra oxygen support when needed.
| | Studies have shown that children with Autism may have decreased blood flow through the brain, and more specifically, the sides of the brain. This can be shown on a SPECT scan (a very special CT scan). Less blood flow through the brain can be equated with decreased oxygen flowing through the brain as well, since one of the major roles of blood flow is to deliver oxygen to tissues. By increasing the amount of oxygen carried by the blood stream (more specifically, the plasma), the greater opportunity for oxygen deprived tissue to receive more oxygen. |
Proof that HBOT works
In 2009, Dr. Daniel Rossignol, along with ten other researchers, published a study showing significant improvements in autistic children who received 40 sessions of HBOT. The study participants showed improvements in “overall functioning, receptive language, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory/cognitive awareness.”
But wait, there’s more. We recently found a story of a 17-year old autistic patient who received 50 sessions over a period of weeks and demonstrated improvement in social skills, school grades, seizures and cognitive functioning. Furthermore, a brain scan showed massive improvement in blood flow to the patient’s brain – that’s pretty awesome proof of HBOT’s effectiveness, isn’t it?
