Introduction

Naturally occurring in fatty, cold-water fish and seaweed and also found in FISH OIL supplements, docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid. It plays a critical role in the development and health of the human central nervous system. DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid, another omega-3 fatty acid, also promote cardiovascular health and should be part of a healthy diet. Your body produces small amounts of DHA, but you must get the rest from foods or in supplement form

Benefits

1.Reduce Cardiovascular Risks

Bruce J. Holub, a former professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario and a longtime researcher into the health benefits of dietary lipids and fatty acids, undertook a review of the scientific literature to assess DHA's role in promoting cardiovascular health. He reported that multiple studies have found that DHA, used in combination with eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, reduced serum levels of triglycerides and increased blood levels of high-density lipoprotein, the so-called good cholesterol. In an article in the August-September 2009 issue of "Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids," Holub said studies show a link between higher levels of DHA in circulating blood biomarkers and reduced risks for coronary atherosclerosis and sudden cardiac death

2.Combats effects of lupus

A team of U.S. researchers conducted an animal study to assess and compare the effects of DHA and EPA on long-term survival and the development of inflammatory kidney disease in lupus erythematosus. They induced lupus-like symptoms in laboratory mice, which were then divided into two study groups. Researchers fed one group of animals a diet of fish oil enriched with DHA and gave the second group a diet of fish oil that had added EPA. Reporting their findings in an article in the May 2010 issue of "The Journal of Immunology," researchers said that DHA consistently outperformed EPA in suppressing inflammatory kidney disease and extending the survival of test animals with lupus.

3.Help relieve pain

Building upon previous research into the pain-relieving properties of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, of which DHA is one, Japanese researchers conducted an animal study to evaluate the efficacy of DHA alone in relieving pain. Researchers fed laboratory mice with varying doses of DHA or olive oil, after which they subjected the animals to various chemical and thermal pain stimuli. In an article in a 2010 issue of "Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin," researchers reported that the mice that were fed DHA showed higher dose-dependent resistance to pain than those that got olive oil.
