Medical Functions
Eucommia''s medicinal attributes include hypotensive, antioxidant, antimutagenic, antibacterial, laxative and diuretic properties. These are attributed to its rich and diverse secondary compounds, such as lignans, iridoids, terpenes, phenolics and alkaloids. At least 37 compounds have been isolated and elucidated structurally in the bark and leaf. Twenty-six of these compounds, including aucubin, chlorogenic acid, eucommiol, gutta percha, deniposide, ulmoside and hydroxyresinol glucopyranside, are on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration''s GRAS (generally recognized as safe) list.
According to the results of many years'' research and studies, Du Zhong leaves from Guizhou region contain more than 40 kinds of microelements and effective compounds but no caffeine. They are especially rich of deniposide, chorogenic acid, aucubin, flavone.
