A fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) can be created by an alkali catalyzed reaction between fats or fatty acids and methanol. The molecules in biodiesel are primarily FAMEs, usually obtained from vegetable oils by transesterification.
As an important chemical intermediate, fatty acidmethyl ester is widely applied to leather and daily use, chemical industries and can be further transformed into other esters, esterified-ammonia, esterified-sulfonic salt and high-carbon fatty acid .
Fatty acid methyl ester can also serve as a raw material of biodiesel which is a new environment-friendly energy source.
