The gherkin is a small cucumber that has been pickled. It is believed to be the first pickle ever, first consumed more than 4,500 years ago, according to a report from the British Broadcasting Company. Gherkins can be either sweet or dill-flavored. While both are relatively low in calories, the sweet gherkins tend to be higher in calories than the dill-flavored.
Gherkins are sown in pots in heated conditions from March/April or in the open ground in May/June. Gherkins are planted 60 cm apart.
The harvest takes place from June to August for plants sown in March, and from September to October for plants sown in the open ground.
