Ginger (Also known as Zingiber Officinale) is mainly used as a Spice for food and medicinal purposes. It is used to prevent and cure health problems. Ginger is indigenous to China and is mostly grown in counties such as; South Eastern Asia, Queensland, India, Japan and Nigeria for commercial purposes. In Nigeria, Ginger is mostly produced in the North.
Ginger rhizomes (underground stems) are thick and hard, pale yellow in colour and covered with distichous scales. It is mostly cultivated in the raining season. It needs a lot of moisture and fertilizer (manure) while growing. The crop is often grown on ridges.
Ginger is often harvested between 8-9 months after which it was planted. Ginger for exports are usually packed in Export Polyethylene bags for shipment in 20ft container or in 40ft containers.
