St John''s wort ( Hypericum perforatum ) is an increasingly popular alternative to conventional antidepressants. It is also found in a number of "alternative" supplements which have nothing to do with the treatment of depression. I noticed it recently in a supplement available at gym in which it was supposed to stabilise the immune system in some way. What is St John''s wort useful for, and how should it be taken?
St John''s wort has been used through the ages. It was previously referred to as "Fuga Demonum" since it was used to protect against demonic possession and "evil spirits". The name is believed to originate from the fact that it flowers around the birthday of St John the Baptist. Wort is the old English word for plant.
The wide use of this plant extract has led to its study in a number of well-designed clinical trials, many of which lend scientific evidence for its use. Its most common use at the moment is in the treatment of mild depression and anxiety. It is also used as an antiviral agent and in topical form for wound healing.
