Leucine is an essential amino acid, meaning that the human body cannot synthesize it, and it therefore must be ingested.
L-Leucine is a type of amino acid which is derived from reactions taking place between pancreatic Enzymes and Protein. Adults need leucine to keep nitrogen balanced in their systems while children need it to keep up satisfactory rates of growth. Leucine is the only dietary amino acid that has the capacity to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
Leucine potently activates the mammalian target of rapamycin kinase that regulates cell growth. Infusion of leucine into the rat brain has been shown to decrease food intake and body weight via activation of the mTOR pathway.
