Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean and parts of Asia. Its common name is synonymous with the confectionery, which surprisingly contains very little licorice. The licorice root, meaning sweet root in Greek, has had a strong tradition in both Eastern and Western herbal medicine dating back thousands of years. Licorice may be one of the most under-appreciated of beneficial herbs, with 90% of Licorice crops being used in tobacco products.

Throughout Europe, Licorice is widely used in food applications and medicines. The major component of Licorice root is glycyrrhizin which is responsible for its sweet taste and is about 50 times sweeter than sugar. Glycyrrhizin is used throughout the world as a flavor Enhancer and a natural sweetener. Licorice contains flavonoids, known for their antioxidant qualities. Also present are amino acids that are important for supporting healthy muscles, cells and body tissues.

Glycyrrhetinic acid may be involved in the metabolism of fat. Studies have shown the potential for the reduction of body fat mass through licorice supplementation and reduction of superficial fat through topical application of a cream containing glycyrrhetinic acid. Licorice is a traditional treatment for upper respiratory complaints. Studies have shown that Licorice extract supports digestive health, contributes to skin vitality   and may also support liver health.    Licorice is also used as an adaptogen and may help the body deal with the effects of stress.

Licorice is an herbaceous legume that grows to a height of 1-2 meters. It has pinnate leaves with pairs of narrow leaflets, pea-like purple-blue flowers, and short, flat seed pods. The root system spreads out horizontally just under the soil surface. The parts used for medicinal and food purposes are the dried unpeeled roots and the underground stems. Cultivated roots are harvested after 3-4 years. The roots are fibrous with a distinctive, sweet aroma.

Licorice has a long and distinguished history of use in herbal medicine. The ancient Greek botanist, Theophrastus recorded therapeutic benefits for dry cough, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. In the first century AD the Roman physician, Pliny the Elder recorded its use as a treatment for asthma and a quench for hunger and thirst. Roman legions reportedly used Licorice to help increase stamina and endurance. Traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine use Licorice in herbal formulas to harmonize other ingredients and to ease their flow into the meridians.
