Ling is an edible fish with tasty, white and relatively firm meat that resembles cod. It can be prepared fresh, salted or dried and can be used in all recipes that traditionally use cod. Roe of ling is considered a delicacy in Spain.

Ling is a cod fish that lives on rocky bottoms seabeds in warm areas at a depth of between 60 and to 1000 metres depths, but is mostly found between 300 and 400 metres. It has a long, slender body that is slightly flattened on the sides.

Along Ling is common along the Norwegian Sea shelf, ling is common from the Shetlands to the south-western part of the Barents Sea. Young fish commonly occur in quite shallow waters along the coast or on offshore banks, for instance in the northern part of the North Sea. Ling becomes sexually matures between the age of five and seven, and are believed to undergo an age- or size-dependent

migration to deeper areas and spawning grounds. The main spawning areas are the North Sea and by the Storegga bank, the western banks of the British Isles and southwest of Iceland. Females spawn up to 60 million eggs that hatch after 10 days in the North Sea and banks north of the British Isles. Ling can live for up to 30 years.
