Maca is so nutrient-packed that Inca warriors reportedly consumed it to energize themselves for battle. Although unrelated to Ginseng, it is sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng because of its similar properties. Maca has been cultivated and used by the native people of Peru for over 2000 years to promote endurance, stamina, strength, and improve vitalitly, energy and fertility.

Maca is mostly known for its outstanding stamina enhancing properties. Many athletes use it with great success to increase their endurance and performance. Maca is not a stimulant, rather, it is a stress-adaptor. It increases energy and endurance, and re-mineralizes poorly nourished bodies.

Maca is also well-known as a natural hormone balancer. It is used to improve fertility and enhance sexual function in both men and women. Women use Maca to help alleviate premenstrual discomfort or menopause symptoms.

The key to Maca’s stamina effects appears to be two groups of novel compounds called macamides and macaenes. Because of its regulating effects on the endocrine system, Maca also helps to build a strong immune system. Maca has also traditionally been used to lubricate stiff arthritic joints, and ease respiratory illness.

Maca produces a root that appears like a radish. The root is usually dried, and can last for at least seven years when preserved properly. It is an important staple in the Andes because it is the most nutritious food grown there. The tuber has an aroma similar to butterscotch and can be consumed either fresh or dried. Fresh, it is baked or roasted on ashes and is considered a delicacy. Dried, it is often boiled with water or milk to make a porridge.

Maca grows in the harshest, most difficult farmlands in the world. It grows at elevations between 10,000 and 15,000 feet, on the barren high plateaus of the central Andes, where it has to withstand intense sunlight, fierce winds, and sub-freezing temperatures. Surprisingly, Maca thrives in those conditions.  Not too long ago, Maca was placed on the list of endangered plants. Now, because of a rapidly growing popularity worldwide, thousands of acres of Maca are cultivated in Peru.
