Organic gelatinised Maca Powder:

The Maca plant, grown in the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia, must surely be the king of all super foods.!

It is a member of the Brassicaceae (cabbage) family which also includes such better known vegetables  as Broccoli, Cauliflower and Turnip. But this member is just a little more special.

It grows at altitudes above 4000 metres and it has been used for many centuries by the native Andean peoples of  South America to help adapt to the harsh conditions of life at high altitudes.

How Maca can benefit your health!

Maca may help to:

1. Improve energy and endurance

2. Improve Libido in men and women

3. Improve fertility

4. Alleviate hormonal dysfunction during menopause

5. Elevate moods (helping with depression)

6. Enhance learning and mental ability.

7. Support immune system and adrenal function

8. Reduce chronic fatigue.

9. Act as a natural alternative to anabolic steroids

10.Act as an anti-carcinogen and antioxidant.

So why is it that Maca seems to help our bodies in so many ways?

Simply put, Maca is an adaptogen  .

What is an Adaptogen?

An adaptogen is a term used by herbalists to refer to natural herb products which they believe to increase the bodies resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue,

-          Adaptogenic herbs help to balance the endocrine hormones and immune system.

-          They have a normalising effect on the body, toning down hyperfunctioning (overactive) systems and strengthening hypofunctioning (underactive) systems.

Maca, as an Adaptogen, has been shown to work very beneficially with the  Endocrine system .

What is the Endocrine system?

In short, it is a system of glands, each of which secretes a type of hormone into the bloodstream to regulate our body.

The major Endocrine glands of the body are:

1. Pineal gland

2. Pituitary gland

3. Thyroid gland

4. Adrenal gland

5. Pancreas

6. Ovary

7. Testes

Organs such as the Heart, Kidneys and Liver have secondary endocrine functions.

So one can easily see how large a part the Endocrine system plays in the human body and how its proper functioning is essential to life.

Therefore as Maca works beneficially on our endocrine system, it becomes quite clear how it might benefit our bodies in so many ways.

What is in a Maca root that makes it so good?

  1. It is rich in minerals such as selenium, calcium, magnesium and iron
  2. It has an amazing 19 amino acids including 9 of the 10 essential ones
  3. It contains Glucosinolates that help to protect against carcinogens which can cause cancer.
  4. It contains Isothiocyanates which help lower cancer risk, especially that of the Colon.
  5. It contains fatty acids which are essential for proper bodily function.
  6. It is high in B vitamins- essential for good mental health.
  7. It contains plant sterols which help block cholesterol absorption.

What does Maca taste like?

Maca has a nutty butterscotch flavour. Some would say it has a malty taste.

What is the daily recommended intake of Maca?

One to two tsp daily (5 to 10gr), Although as Maca is a normal food, there really is no strict limit on how much you can take. The natives of the Andes often consume up to 500gr on a daily basis. Remember that Maca is a natural food and needs to be used every day to experience its full benefits. Sporadic use will not yield the same benefits.

Are there any side effects?

There are no known side effects to  Gelatinised Maca, although caution is recommended if you suffer from an over active thyroid. It is recommended to start with 1/2 a teaspoon daily and increase the amount over the next few days. Consuming too much too soon can cause excessive energy in some people so it is better to let your body slowly adapt to Maca.

What is Gelatinized maca and why is it better than raw maca powder?

Gelatinised Maca is a premium grade of Maca. Gelatinised Maca does not contain gelatin as the name might suggest.

Gelatinization is a process  where the starch content of Maca is broken down through a gentle heating process that leaves you with a more potent, more digestible, pleasant tasting and fully soluble Maca powder. The heating process does not affect the beneficial properties of Maca. The natives of the Andes, who have been benefiting from maca for centuries, always cook the Maca root. It is never consumed raw. Less is needed of Gelatinised Maca to achieve the same results as with ordinary raw Maca powder.

One important point to note is that the cruciferous vegetable family(of which maca is a member) contain substances known as Goitrogens. Excessive intake of Goitrogens may interfere with proper thyroid functioning in people with a poorly functioning thyroid and/or a diet low in iodine. Heating or cooking (Gelatinisation) cruciferous vegetables neutralises the Goitrogens and eliminates any problems that they might cause.

How can I take Maca?

Maca can be taken in capsules, powder, chips or liquid form. Good quality Gelatinized Maca is fully soluble so you can mix it in your shakes, smoothies, porridge, yogurt etc.etc.
