Botanical Name: Physalis peruviana

Common Names: In Spanish: aguaymanto, uchuva, uvilla, capulí, tomatillo silvestre. In English: incan berry, golden berry, cape goosberry.

Family: Solanaceae

Introduction: This fruit native to the Andes of Peru was discovered in 1753 by the famous Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus, who named it Physalis peruviana. Its production started in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and it was one of the few species cultivated in the royal gardens of the citadel of Machu Picchu. At present, it has gained world fame because of its great nutritional value, medicinal properties and its delicious flavor.

Description: Perennial herbaceous plant that grows in hot dry areas. It can reach up to 1 meter high. The berries are round, orange-yellow, sweet and small (between 1.5 cm and 2 cm in diameter). Its internal structure is similar to a miniature tomato. The berries are protected by an inedible husk of a texture similar to paper.

Origin: Native to the Valleys in the Andes of Peru.
