Expressly produced according to the exclusive Van Winkle family wheated-recipe and specially selected from barrels in the heart of the aging warehouses, this bourbon remained undisturbed for 15 years to age in deep-charred heavy oak untouched by human hands, unhurried by time. Tasting Notes: An elegant and sweet aroma with caramel corn and vanilla. Features big flavor of leather, oak and complex fruitiness. Finishes smooth with notes of spice and oak tannins.
This stunning 23 year old straight Kentucky Bourbon whiskey was selected from Pappy Van Winkle's private stock and bottled at 95.6 proof (47.8% ABV) for their Family Reserve series.
Filled from charred American oak barrels, this limited release Bourbon was bottled as bottle number A1535 in 2005, complete with dipped wax capsule, and comes supplied with a fine black velvet bag. This is an incredibly rare expression of the 23 year old that is scarcely seen these days.
Released in very small batches annually, this Pappy 23 year old was first seen on the market in 1998 and more recently has been in unbelievable demand. Described as having a long lasting oaky finish whilst being mellow, sweet and easy drinking - the brand themselves recommend you drink it neat!
It hasn't gone unnoticed with the critics either; winning the Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Awards in 2008 and picking up a rating of 95pts from the Whisky Advocate along the way.
There have been four generations of Van Winkle's working for the company since Julian Van Winkle III was joined by his son Preston in 2001. The Van Winkles decided to move all distilling to the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky in 2002 - previously it was produced in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
