Pueraria mirifica , also known as Kwao Krua or White Kwao Krua or Thailand Kudzu, is a root found in northern and north eastern Thailand and Myanmar. Kwao Krua is a native herbal plant found in deep forests of the northern region of Thailand. Researchers in the last few years have examined its properties and assessed its possible medical uses.

There are 4 varieties of kwao krua that are considered beneficial and can be used for medicinal, food supplementary and cosmetic purposes. They are White Kwao Krua (Pueraria mirifica), Red Kwao Krua (Butea superba), Black Kwao Krua and Dull Grey Kwao Krua. The White Kwao Krua is the herb used by females and the Red Kwao Krua is the herb used by males. White Kwao Krua has a high concentration of phytoestrogens, while Red Kwao Krua is used by males and has aldosterone, which is a natural hormone. Although the name “Kwao Krua” had been applied to several species of plants having tuberous roots, it was definitively identified as Pueraria mirifica in 1952 from which an unusual estrogenic phenol miroestrol was isolated eight years later.

In Thailand, the plant “Kwao Krua” is considered to be a rejuvenating adaptogenic herb and has a history of use in folk medicine. Local communities in Thailand have used Pueraria mirifica for well over one hundred years, specifically for its supposed rejuvenating qualities.

Pueraria mirifica, also known as 'white kwao krua', is a natural tuberous herbal root and contains high levels of natural phytoestrogens, such as  Miroestrol, Deoxymiroestrol, Daidzein,  Genistin, Genistein, B-Sitosterol, Stigmasterol, Coumestrol, Pueraria, Campesterol, Mirificoumestan, Kwakhurin, Mirificine, and etc.

The Pueraria mirifica (White Kwao Krua) Extract used in dietary supplements is derived from the root of the plant.

Mechanism

Miroestrol is a phytoestrogen, a plant-derived chemical that mimics the biological activity of the hormone estrogen. Miroestrol was first reportedly isolated from the Thai herb Pueraria mirifica in 1960 and thought to be responsible for the supposed rejuvenating properties of the plant. However, more recent studies have suggested that the active ingredient may actually be the closely related chemical compound deoxymiroestrol (shown below), and the reported presence of miroestrol may only have been an artifact of the isolation procedure. When deoxymiroestrol is exposed to the oxygen in air, it is converted to miroestrol.

A comparative study of the estrogenic properties of phytoestrogens found that deoxymiroestrol was similar in activity to other known phytoestrogens, such as coumestrol, but that miroestrol was significantly less active. Because of their estrogenic activities, miroestrol, deoxymiroestrol, and other related compounds have been the targets of scientific research including total synthesis.

Extracts of Pueraria mirifica reportedly containing miroestrol are marketed as dietary supplements intended to lead to breast enhancement in women. However, there is no scientific basis for such claims. The Federal Trade Commission has taken legal action against marketers for these fraudulent claims.
