The Reishi Mushroom, also known as the lingzhi, or "supernatural" mushroom, has been a component of ancient Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. Called "The Mushroom of Immortality" in historical Chinese texts, it has been traditionally used to promote rest, relax the mind, enhance vital energy and memory function, and support the respiratory system.
Though the Reishi Mushroom may not actually confer immortality on anyone, modern research has found that it does offer many potential health benefits, such as stimulating the immune system, supporting liver health and helping maintain blood sugar levels already within the normal range.
Don't judge this fungus by its looks - it's what's inside that counts! This bioactive fungus contains important minerals like potassium, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, iron andzinc, as well as all the essential amino acids, especially lysine and leucine. Also present are various polysaccharides andtriterpenes, which are bioactive compounds with possible beneficial effects on liver health. Studies have shown these components to also be useful in promotinggastric well-being and, for some individuals, helping maintain blood glucose levelsalready in the normal range.
Evidence also suggests that these compounds may be helpful in boosting the immune system and may discourage oxidative damage by free radicals. The triterpenes in particular may also help maintain blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within normal range.
Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) grows around the world in temperate and tropical areas. In the wild, this stalkless fungus attaches near the base of deciduous trees. However, it is only very rarely found in nature, so it is most commonly cultivated either in a controlled indoor setting or outside on logs and woodchips.
