From the wild, untamed plains of Northern Africa and the sandy dunes of Arabia, a valiant herb has traveled around the world! Senna has long been used in traditional herbal tonics in its native region, and more recently has been used in the West by those interested in weight management. This herb is especially appreciated by some for its tendency to encourage bowel movements.
Most famously known for its help inencouraging bowel movements, the delicate grayish-green leaves of the Senna plant contain anthraquinones, bioactive compunds known to stimulate the colon.
The same glycosides, sennosides A and B, are found in lower concentration in the brown curved pods of the Senna plant, which aredried and powdered or brewed into a tea. Their effect is found to be milder than the leaves.
Dimeric glycosides in dried senna extract are converted to the active monoanthrones by bacterial action in the colon. This produces colonic contractions, providing the laxative effect in addition to electrolyte secretion.
Because Senna may act as a stimulant, it can be found in many teas intended for those interested in weight management.
Senna (Senna alexandrina Mill.), a bushy shrub native to Northern Africa and Arabia,is now cultivated in tropical climates on every continent except Europe. The Senna plant can grow up to three feet tall, sporting delicate, grayish-green leaves and pale-green, woody stems. Senna's small, yellow flowersare followed by brown, curved pods.
All the components of Senna have all been used in traditional herbal tonics since the ninth century. Dried, the leaves and pods can be made into powder or brewed into a tea.
