Spinach, the popular green leafy vegetable, is an annual flowering plant native to southwestern and central Asia, however it is now commonly cultivated all over the world. The Spinach has semi-triangular shaped leaves attached to a stem that generally grows to be approximately one foot tall. The bright green leaves begin large at the base of the stem and grow smaller towards the top of the plant. Spinach also has very tiny yellow flowers that eventually harden into a fruit-like cluster that holds several seeds. Spinach is often consumed fresh as well as frozen, and is also often dried and made into concentrated powdered supplements. It can emit a fresh, grass-like aroma and has a savory, slightly salty flavor.
