Valerian has a history of therapeutic use dating back to antiquity. Galen, the foremost medical researcher of the time noted its sedative properties. In the Bible we discover that it was used as a healing ointment.  Valerian was also widely used by medieval herbalists to treat a variety of ailments. In the First World War it was used to treat soldiers suffering from shell shock and in World War II it was used to reduce the stress of air raids. To this day, valerian remains a popular botanical in complementary medicine.

Valerian contains a volatile oil, valerenic acid, thought to possess sedative properties. Studies have shown that Valerian may significantly improve the quality and quantity of sleep. The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine Studies, University of California, concluded that available evidence suggests that valerian may improve sleep quality without producing any side effects.

A study to examine the long term therapeutic effect valerian has on sleep patterns, sleep quality and well-being, showed a significant decrease in symptoms.  Valerian is widely used in complementary medicine; in formulas along with other calming herbs such as passionflower, hops, Lemon balm and skullcap, to reduce mild stress and enhance sleep. Valerian is considered a safe, gentle herb.

Valerian also contains flavonoids, known for their antioxidant qualities. Preliminary studies have shown that hesperidin, found in valerian, may help to maintain healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure already in the normal range.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a member of the Valerianaceae family and is native to Europe and parts of Asia and is now grown in North America.  It is a hardy herbaceous perennial plant with feather-like leaves and clusters of small pink to white flowers. It can grow up to 6.5 feet tall and has a strong, distinctive odour. The dried rhizome and roots of Valerian are used to produce a powdered valerian extract. It's not just humans who appreciate the benefits of valerian. Cats are so fond of it that they will dig up the roots and eat them as catnip. Worms are also attracted by the roots; therefore gardeners have been known to plant valerian near vegetables, which enhances earthworm activity increasing the level of phosphorous in the soil.
